Alkaline Diet - How Can Alkaline Diet Transform Your Health

The diet of our ancestors is completely different from what we are so accustomed to these days. With the advancement of technology, the types of foods we consume are dragged along. A trip to the grocery store will shock you with aisles and aisles of processed food items and animal products. You will not have a hard time finding fast food when eating out as practically every corner of the street has one.

Even fad diets are partly to blame, for introducing a whole new eating habit, such as high-protein diets. In the recent years, consumption of animal products and refined food items has increased, as more and more people leave out the daily supply of fruits and vegetables in their diet.

It comes as no surprise why, these days, many are suffering from different types of allergies, bone diseases, heart problems and many others. Some health experts link these diseases to the type of foods we eat. There are certain types of food that disrupts a certain balance in our body that, during such instance, health problems arise. If only we could modify our eating habits, it’s not unlikely that prevention of diseases and restoration of health is achieved.

The Importance of Alkaline

Our bodies need to maintain a healthy and steady alkaline to acid ratio, which is signified by the pH level of our body. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, and anything lower than 7 is considered acidic. Processed food items, meat and meat products, sweets, and some beverages and condiments generally produce excessive amounts of acidity in the body.

Acidosis, abnormally high acidity level in the blood and other tissues of the body, is the one thing that several different diseases have one thing in common. And many health experts believe that acidosis is responsible for a lot of fatal diseases that many people are afflicted with these days.

Alkaline, on the other hand, naturally occurs in the body to neutralize excess acidity in the body, which is its main role. However, alkaline also becomes depleted at times – especially when there’s too much acid it needs to get rid of, and we do not consume foods that replenish our body’s alkalinity.

Maintaining a Healthy pH Level

As mentioned earlier, acidosis leads to many health-related problems. Dangerous levels of acid get to circulate in our body and break into tissues and organs when not properly neutralized. To prevent this, one must see to it that a healthy pH balance in the body is maintained. And to offset the excessive amounts of acid is to increase your body’s alkalinity.

Determining whether or not your pH levels are prevalently alkaline may be done with easy-to-use pH level strips which you can purchase in drug stores or medical supplies stores. There are pH level strips meant for testing using your saliva, and there are those for using your urine.

Basically, a saliva pH level strip will determine how much acid your body is producing; normally it’s between 6.5 and 7.5 throughout the day. While a urine pH level strip will tell how well you excrete excess amounts of acid; you should get between 6.0 and 6.5 in the morning and between 6.5 and 7.0 at night.

The Dangers of Excessive Acid

If you constantly experience exhaustion, headaches and having frequent colds and flu, then that could be it – you have high acid levels in your body. But the ill effects of acidosis in the body don’t stop there; you might be surprised at the wide-ranging types of diseases you could get with dangerous levels of acid in your body.

Depression, hyperacidity, ulcer, skin dryness, acne and obesity are some of those linked to excessive acid levels in the body. Then there are those that are more serious such as joint diseases, osteoporosis, bronchitis, frequent infections and heart diseases.

Even if you begin to take medications for these illnesses, the symptoms may be masked, but they will still continue to affect your health as you are not attacking them from their roots. No matter what medications you take – pills, anti-inflammatory and the like – your body will only become more acidic because of these medications.

Alkaline Diet Approach

To get to the roots of these health problems, the body’s pH level must be brought back to normal. There are alkaline foods that can help replenish the depleted alkaline levels in the body while neutralizing excess amounts of acid. Through an alkaline diet, sufficient amounts of alkaline are re-introduced into the body, thus bringing back the pH level to predominantly alkaline.

So how do you incorporate an alkaline diet into your eating habits? First, you can start by cutting down your intake of processed foods. These type of foods contain chemicals that only increase the acidity of your body ones they’re digested. Second, steer clear of meat and meat products, dairies and alcohol. Third, load up on fresh fruits and vegetables, as they naturally are high in alkalinity.

Even acidic fruits like oranges and lemons become alkaline after they have been digested and absorbed by the body. As a general rule, 75% of your daily food consumption should consist of alkalizing foods. The more alkaline foods we provide our bodies with, the more efficient the neutralization of excess acids will be.

5 tricks to crush 1000 calories AFTER Christmas

We trust you had a very Merry Christmas full of great fellowship with friends and family, and of course plenty of GREAT food!  At the same time, it's critically important that you immediately get back on track with your nutrition plan today, otherwise yesterday's indulgence can easily spiral into WEEKS of dietary deviance!

Now, if you're anything like me you've probably been indulging a bit too frequently throughout December, and especially this last week.  I know, you wouldn't think a "nutrition guru" like me has his weaknesses, but alas, I'm human just like you.

And to be totally honest, I've actually gained 5 pounds this month...not good!  But instead of throwing in the towel and gaining a lot more blubber, I’m fighting back by doing these 5 tricks to crush 1000 calories every day this week:

1. I threw out ALL of the junk food from my house. It’s true; if it’s out of sight it will be out of mind, too. (Calories saved = 1500 per day… maybe more.)

2. I’m increasing my fiber intake to 40 grams per day. (Most Americans only get 15.) This will help clean out pounds of "toxic junk" from my digestive system right away AND help me feel full longer. High-fiber foods include: barley, beans (black beans, navy beans, and lima), bran, sprouted grain cereal, peas, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, red potatoes with the skin, broccoli, oatmeal, and apples. I also use Benefiber in my nutrition shakes which you can find at any grocery store. (Calories saved… 400 a day.)

3. I’m dropping my total sugar intake to 30 grams or less per day. Sugar causes belly (and body) blubber, it lowers your immune system, and it is highly addictive, as I soon rediscovered after my holiday. Lose it and you'll lose those pesky cravings, too. (Calories saved… 300 a day.)

4. I’m drinking a gallon of water a day to help flush my system and to improve my natural calorie-burning metabolism. If you aren't properly hydrated you won't burn the flab as fast as you could. It's true.

5. I’m exercising intensely twice a day for 30 to 45 minutes a session. Today I exercised with weights and tonight I went on a 30 minute walk/jog on the treadmill. Remember... body blubber is just stored fuel. To burn it, you gotta move! (Calories burned = 600 a day.)

So there are 5 easy tips that can help you keep over 1000 calories off your body this week.

Christmas - The Broken Tradition That Left Families Smiling

120x240 Logo

The jolly festive season is upon us once again, Christmas a time for happiness/ turkey/mulled wine and crackers. These are just some of the traditions that are upheld at this time of year by people who on Christmas day celebrate the birth of our Lord.
Following this big day we then have the task of putting into force our new year's resolutions just so we can break them, just another tradition where vows and promises are made.
Traditions are there for the benefit of remembrance, you have the person that abides by the
rules and then you have others that intend to do things a little different.
Whoever or whatever sort of person you are tradition is tradition.

By replacing turkey with a plate of pig's trotters on the Christmas menu is another Christmas tradition broken. Remember to be extra careful who you invite on the day for dinner if porky's feet are dish of the day.

A Christmas idea

A fantastic way to keep family togetherness for ever for generations to come when bearing gifts to loved ones is to give each member an identical piece of jewellery symbolizing unity. It is a fabulous way of bonding and proving to the world that blood is thicker than water
Let us go back in time where Scottish tartan denoted the clan you belonged too. Cherokee indians/apaches etc expressed their tribal identities by headwear or other colourful symbols. So why not bring your tribe/clan together with there own identities in the form of a piece of gold or silver.

Make your new year's resolution today and go in search of the symbol that will be recognized and passed down to future generations, by doing this another tradition is broken, but if it brings happiness, what the heck.

Unison prevails in the form of your own jewellery trade mark where your chosen symbol ring/chain sends a message to the world that this family would proudly like to say, united we stand.

Jewellery gifts can be made extra special by designing your own. Jewellers can take your ideas and work miracles with them as in putting you and your family on the map with your own trademark. Be sure to check out this amazing site

All About the Cheese in the Cheesecake

What makes cheesecakes adaptable to any culinary style
is their cheese. Back in Ancient Greece, every market
sold cheeses to those who cannot make their own. By
the time the fourth century B.C. came, the most
accepted white Greek cheeses were being seasoned with
spices and baked into a manner similar to pies and
cakes. Even the Romans, during the height of their
power, used a great deal of cheese in their cooking.
They preserved cheese using a salt-based sauce and
provided the recipe for the celebration of the wedding
cake, which still contain cheese as the main

The Americans and Their Cream Cheese

A soft, mild-tasting, sweet, white cheese is the cream
cheese. Generally, cream cheese contains at least 33
percent milk fat and a moisture content of not more
than 55 percent and a pH level ranging from 4.4 to
4.9. Cream cheese is not usually matured and is meant
to be consumed fresh. This makes it diverse from other
supple cheeses, like the Neufchatel and the Europe’s
Brie. The taste, production and texture of the cream
cheese are more comparable to that of the Mascarpone
and Boursin.

Cream cheese was known to originate in the United
States during the year 1872. In Chester, New York, a
dairyman developed a richer cheese made from whole
milk and cream. During the year 1880, A.L. Reynolds,
one of the cheese distributors in New York, first
began issuing cream cheese, which was then covered in
tin-foil wrappers, called the Philadelphia Brand.
Hence, the name Philadelphia Brand cream cheese was
adopted by the Reynolds for the product since, at that
time, the quality of food products were related with
the city where it originated.

It was not until 1912, when James L. Kraft created the
pasteurized cheese. This invention eventually led to
the improvement of the pasteurized Philadelphia Brand
cream cheese, which is not the most fashionable cheese
used in making cheesecakes.

The French and Their Neufchatel

While the Americans like to use cream cheeses for
their cheesecakes, the French used Neufchatel cheese
in their own culinary style of creating cheesecakes.
Neufchatel is a flavorful cheese that provides
cheesecakes with a light and airy texture and
eventually became the basis of the modern American

The French Neufchatel is slightly crumbly, soft and
mould-ripened made in the region of Normandy. It was
one of the oldest cheeses in France with production
dating back as far as the 6th century. Neufchatel
cheese is somewhat similar to camembert in appearance,
with a white, dry and edible rind, but with a sharper
and saltier taste.

Additionally, Neufchatel cheese has the aroma and
taste of mushrooms. What makes this cheese different
is that unlike other cheeses with soft and white
rinds, Neufchatel cheese has a grainy texture.

Although, Neufchatel has been less popular after the
World War II, several cheesecake recipes still use the
cheese. In fact, there are also Americans who likes to
use Neufchatel instead of cream cheese when making
cheesecakes, which they can purchase at several
gourmet shops.

The Italians and Their Ricotta

When the Italian adopted the cheesecake recipe, they
used ricotta cheese to make their cheesecake a little

Ricotta cheese is a whey cheese made in Italy. It uses
whey, which is a limpid, low-fat and nutritious liquid
that is the by-product of cheese production. In its
basic form, ricotta is also an un-ripened and uncooked
curd, which is normally un-drained of its whey. It has
a fresh, creamy and grainy white appearance, slightly
sweet in taste and usually contains around 5% fat.

BBQ Food is the Mental Cue that summer is Here

Winter is over, spring has sprung, and summer is on its way. It’s the perfect time to take the cover off of the barbecue grill and get grilling. BBQ food is the perfect start to a great summer. As the smells of neighborhood grills begin wafting down the streets of towns all across America, there is a theme that permeates the breeze. Summer is here; it’s time for fun in the sun.

There is nothing that takes me back to my childhood quite like BBQ food. The smells, the flavors, and most importantly, the feeling of quality time spent with family and the knowledge that we are building memories for our children to someday share with their children. If you think about it, you can have BBQ food of some sort, almost any night of the week. As long as you are willing to use your grill, which has the benefit of keeping the heat of cooking on the outside of your home.

Here are some great grilling ideas that will enable you to have BBQ food almost anytime you want.
1) Veggies taste better when cooked on a grill. You can also have fun mixing flavors and seasonings. Kraft had a great idea of butter mix-ins for vegetables, I also like to marinate mine in Italian dressing and grill them in foil packets.
2) Almost any meat you can purchase will taste better cooked on a grill. I even enjoy smoked sausage cooked on a grill with BBQ sauce.
3) Make it a great night by allowing family members to make their own shish kabobs.
4) Have theme nights for your BBQ food, you can do Italian BBQ, Mexican BBQ, Caribbean, be creative and have fun.

The real beauty of BBQ food is that it is an excuse we use to build lasting memories of good times with family and friends. There is no reason we can’t make meal times special each and every day, not just during the summer months.

Are You Suffering From This Silent Epidemic?

Do you ever feel tired or lack energy? Can’t seem to lose those extra pounds? Suffer from low thyroid function? Are you aging not quite as gracefully as you would like to? Do you go through mood swings or become irritated easily?
If your answer is yes to any of these questions, the culprit could be your hormones. And even if you are not suffering from noticeable symptoms, there is a very good chance your hormones are out of balance, dramatically increasing your risk of disease.
But how do our hormones get out of balance?
Imagine that you are a detective, given the following clues:
  • At the turn of the last century, diabetes affected 0.01% of the U.S. population. Today, one in three Americans has diabetes or a precursor to it.
  • In 1900, breast cancer was very rare. By 1960, it affected one in 20 women. Today, one out of three women develops breast cancer.
  • Before 1921, a total of 20 cases of endometriosis had been reported worldwide. By 2000, nearly 20% of all U.S. women of childbearing age have endometriosis.
  • A 1997 study showed that by the age of eight, one in seven white girls and half of African-American girls have started puberty.
  • In the last 60 years, the average male sperm count has fallen by half… while the incidence of testicular cancer has tripled.
  • During the year of 2002, the number of clinical cases of gynecomastia (male breast growth) doubled.

Morphing Genes… or Toxic Environment?

Now, keep your detective hat on. Do you think the human race has really changed that much in the last 100 years? Or do you believe that our environment (what we breathe, what we ingest and what we put on our skin) has something to do with it?
The answer, of course, is that the human race has changed very little in the last 100 years (at least in terms of our physiology and biology).
On the other hand, what we eat, drink and rub into our skin has changed completely… in a VERY short period of time. And these changes have profoundly impacted our hormones.
Here’s some more food for thought…
Hormones are biologically active in amounts as tiny as just one-trillionth of a gram and the average American consumes pounds of hormones and chemicals that mimic hormones every year!
Click & automatically get these savings! While most people are familiar with the hormones produced inside of our bodies (like estrogen and testosterone), we often fail to realize that hormones and hormone-mimics (a.k.a.- endocrine disruptors) are introduced through the foods we eat and the products we use everyday.
And while the ill-effects of endocrine disruptors may not be seen or felt immediately, they set the stage for disease. These chemicals accumulate in fatty tissue and are released slowly into the body, dripping out their “hormonal instructions” over a long period of time.

What’s Hampering Your Hormonal Harmony?

So why is this happening? Let’s take a look at the trends that parallel the endocrine epidemic:
  • * From 1920 to 2000, the U.S. production of synthetic chemicals increased from less than a million pounds a year to more than 140 billion pounds a year.
  • * In 1977, the FDA finds 38% of all grocery foods sampled contain pesticides. By 1998 that number climbs to 55%.
  • * In the 1990′s, the bottled water market heats up. In 2006 31 billion plastic water bottles were produced.
  • * In 1992, the FDA announced that 65% of women’s cosmetics sampled contained carcinogenic contaminants.
  • * As of 1998, 75,500 synthetic chemicals were registered as appearing in consumer products, agriculture and industry. The FDA oversees 8,000 chemicals used in foods and cosmetics alone.
Endocrine disrupting chemicals are everywhere. And if you think “a little” won’t hurt you, think again. Remember: these nasty compounds can be highly bioactive at just one trillionth of a gram.
But before you throw your hands up and concede to the demise of disruptors, take heart: with a little knowledge and planning, you can greatly reduce your exposure.
In this article, you’ll learn an easy way to avoid one of the nastiest and most prevalent endocrine disruptors – BPA.
Unfortunately, the dangers of disruptors don’t end with BPA. In the Your Plate, Your Fate series you’ll learn about the many other hormonal hellions that could be making you sick and fat including:
  • The top 14 endocrine disrupting chemicals, where they’re found and the simple ways to avoid them
  • The foods that set your future children up for a “thrifty phenotype” – a genetic predisposition to store, store, store calories… leading to a lifelong weight struggle
  • The common kitchen tool that leaches estrogen-mimics into your cuisine
  • The “fun” food that’s totally safe when properly prepared, but loaded with endocrine disruptors when cooked the way 90% of us usually do
  • This powerful endocrine offender is linked to obesity, prostate cancer and breast cancer – and get this – it’s detectable in 95% of Americans! But there are just four simple things you can do to avoid it completely!
  • The”clean seafoods” you can enjoy that won’t contaminate your plate with hormone mimics…or heavy metals
  • The top 7 foods that expose your little ones to endocrine disruptors that affect the development of their brain and sex organs
  • The one serving of baby food that exposes your baby to 100 times the EPA daily limit for a dangerous endocrine disruptor called dioxin
  • The two chemicals in everyday foods that reduce your thyroid hormones and can lead to hypothyroidism
In Your Plate, Your Fate you’ll learn how to clear the chemicals from your cuisine and get your hormones back in harmony… one delicious bite at a time!

Why You Should Toss Your Scale Today

R.D.K holdings S.AIf you’re on the quest for successful fat loss, one of the best things that you could do right now, contrary to what most people believe, is chuck your scale.
“But how will you know if you’re progressing?” you might think.  The truth of the matter is that there is really no reason to have a body weight scale in your house.
Let’s go over why this is and present you with some smarter strategies for faster success.
The Problem With The Scale
The big issue that occurs with the scale is the fact that the scale will not account for fat or muscle mass lost, or will it take into account you gaining water.
If you eat a high salt meal the night before, it’s highly likely and probably that you could be two to three pounds heavier the next day.
Did you gain body fat?
Definitely not.
Your body is just retaining water from the extra sodium you took in.  Most people don’t realize this, thus it instantly causes disappointment and frustration to set in, which then may lead them to pack their diet in entirely.
Additionally, if you’ve been working out hard and gain lean muscle tissue, this could make your scale weight go up, which you would then view as a negative thing. But really, it’s a very positive thing.
More lean muscle mass means a firmer, fitter body, plus a higher metabolic rate. It’s really a win-win, yet few people would celebrate the scale going up.
The Better Approaches
R.D.K holdings S.ASo what’s the better approach? How can you measure your progress if you aren’t using a body weight scale?
The first great strategy is to simply use the mirror. Let the mirror be your guide.
Do you look leaner? Look more defined? Can you see your waist size decreasing? If so, these are all great indications of progress.  Chances are, you will be moving in the right direction.
In addition to this, you might also consider getting your body fat test taken. This is the true way to measure your progress as your body fat will represent how much actual body fat you have on your body – which is what you want to decrease.
It gives the complete picture of what’s going on so that you know that your body fat is in fact changing.
Finally, the last method to use is the clothes trick. If you’re losing body fat, chances are your clothes will fit looser, even if you are gaining muscle mass since muscle tissue is such dense tissue altogether.
If you are now fitting into jeans you never used to, this is a very good sign and you should keep on doing what you’re doing because you’re on path to success.
So there you have the main things to consider about the scale. It really doesn’t work in your favor in any way, so choose otherwise.  Use a different measurement and you’ll likely have more success because of it.

What You Need To Know About Weight Control For Children?

Healthy Eating for KidsIn the United States alone, an astounding one fourth of the overall population of teenagers and children are found to be obese. But despite this rate, it is still alarmingly growing. With parents and grandparents catering to their children’s unhealthy eating and bad idling habits, this is not surprising. But if you are concerned for your children’s future, you know this is a serious matter to be considered. More than controlling what they eat or what they do, you need to consider weight control for children to treat the matter before it goes worse.

Obesity, when not treated properly and as early as possible, can be carried on to teen years, and eventually, to adult years. Of course, when a person is obese, it is the abnormally fat figure which is always being ridiculed, bullied, and harassed at. Unfortunately, the problem goes beyond the appearance and social distraction.

Obesity, as clinically discovered, can lead to some chronic diseases, such as heart failure and diabetes. It can even go worse, as these diseases can hit a person as early as in their childhood obese years.

So, instead of giving in to your children’s craving of sugar-loaded and fattening foods or unhealthy habits of being inactive most of the day, start looking out for the best weight control program for children. This is imperative if you don’t want to see your children suffering from chronic diseases and be plagued with expensive hospital treatments.

If you can’t simply get your obese child to eating the right or healthy foods, just think of the life and death matter, which is not a far possibility if not given the right treatment. There are many approaches available for you to successfully lure your children to get treated, to eat healthily, and live normally, just like other healthy children. So, there is no big deal if you’re thinking how you can encourage your child.

When choosing weight control program for children, you need to be very careful. If you are thinking you can apply your kind of diet, it isn’t going to treat the obesity problem of your child. This is because children basically need different kinds of nutrition as you do.

Weight control programs for adults are different from weight control for children. It is therefore recommended that you consult with the right persons, such as a pediatrician or nutritionist, before you submit your child to a specific weight control program.

The diet with which children are subjected to focuses on lowering weight gain while they are growing. It emphasizes the need of resorting to healthy eating habits as well as active lifestyle rather than just being in front of the television or computer sets all the time.

Now, when it comes to talking or encouraging your child into undergoing a specific weight control program, this not a difficult phase at all. What you need to do is to ensure you show your support and love for them. Make sure you are clear about how you are very much concerned over their health and future well-being.

Also, it is important that you guide them all throughout their childhood to teen years and even from teen to adult years. It is also a big factor to being successful in treating obesity problems if you can be a role model to them, from your eating habits, activeness, and healthy living ways. If you can increase family activities, then you even increase chances of being successful in this matter.

How to grow potatoes

Grow PotatoesWith the way things are at present financially and environmentally, more and more people are learning how to grow their own veggies at home. Not only does this save money, but the veggies taste a whole lot better than anything you can buy at a store!

Potatoes are one of the most popular home grown vegetables as theyre relatively easy to grow and you dont need a lot of space.  You can even grow them in bags on a balcony.

However there are a few rules to follow to avoid diseased potatoes, so its best to get some expert advice so you know exactly what to do and what to look out for.

I didn't know this, but apparently there's well over a 1000 known varieties of potatoes in existence around the world. Can you believe it?

Heirloom varieties are famous for their flavours, and equally notorious for growing well in some areas, but not in others.

Apparently when selecting varieties for your garden, you should consider your main cooking use, variety productivity, suitability to your soil conditions and disease resistance. The potato variety that you pick should also be a good fit for your climate because healthy plants produce better-tasting tubers.

I can recommend the ebook "How to Grow Great Potatoes" as the most comprehensive  guide on what to do. It was co-authored by a world leading horticultural expert on potatoes, who works full time advising professional growers.  She has a Masters Degree in Plant Pathology and Nutrition - so she knows a thing or two about pest, disease, nutrition and cultivation.

It is 105 pages long and contains over 120 colour images.  It covers history, health benefits, varieties, planting in a garden or a container, nutrition, watering, pests, diseases, harvesting and lots more  Its beautifully designed and illustrated and comes with two bonus ebooks, How to Grow Jerusalem Artichokes and The Yummy Potato Cookbook.

If you've ever had problems with your home grown potatoes, or just wish you knew exactly what to do, How to Grow Great Potatoes is chock full of incredible information. Written by a plant nutrition and disease specialist who is an expert advisor to professional growers and horticulturists, it's jam packed with all sorts of great info, including  colour photos. It contains a wealth of information on varieties, soil preparation, growing in tyres or bags, nutrition, disease control and pest control.  I can highly recommend purchasing it - it's available as an ebook for instant download and comes with 2 free bonuses -a book on growing Jerusalem Artichokes and great little potato cookbook.

This book contains 11 beautifully illustrated chapters which cover everything from soil preparation, planting, watering,  nutrition and controlling pests and diseases.

I love this book. It's got a quick start guide for beginners and quite advanced information for seasoned growers.  Co-Author Lucia Grimmer holds a Masters Degree in Plant Pathology and Nutrition - so she knows a thing or two about pest, disease, nutrition and cultivation.
